What makes a best friend and why it is so rare

A clay pair of best friends walking side by side on a quiet path, one with an arm around the other

Most people have a handful of good friends and one, maybe two, best friends. Time and history matter, yet plenty of people you have known for years will never become a best friend. What decides it is how the friendship feels when you are in it.

What makes a best friend different?

A best friend is the one you call when something goes really wrong. They are the one who can sit with you in silence and it does not feel strange. You can tell them something embarrassing or something you are proud of, and they get it without you having to explain too much.

With most friends, you share parts of yourself. With a best friend, you can bring all of it. They do not need you to be a certain way, and you do not need to hold anything back.

What is a best friend in socionics terms?

Socionics, the theory Typeza is built on, has a close match for this feeling: Duality. A dual is someone whose strengths cover your blind spots, and yours cover theirs. They give you what you need most without trying, and you do the same for them.

Socionics looks at the kinds of information each person notices easily and the kinds they find tiring. Duals are confident in different kinds. So the thing that wears you out is the thing your dual handles without effort, and the other way around.

Two people who are confident in the same things understand each other well. Duals get something extra: each one is looked after where they need it most.

Why best friends are rare

Duality is one relationship type out of 16. The math alone makes it rare. For every dual you meet, you meet 15 other people who are not.

Even when you do meet a dual, the friendship does not always click right away. Duality shows its value when you are close. From a distance, a dual can even seem a bit odd. You might meet them at a party and think nothing special. It is only when you spend real time together that the fit becomes clear.

That is why most people do not have many best friends. The combination of the right type, enough time together and both people caring enough to stay close is not common.

What does a best friend give you?

A best friend makes life easier in small, constant ways. You do not have to manage yourself around them. When something good happens, they are one of the first people you want to tell. When something hard happens, they are the one you call.

They notice when something is wrong before you say it. They can tell you the truth and it lands as care. You can argue with them and it does not break anything.

With other friends, parts of the friendship take effort. You have to explain yourself more, or watch your words, or choose the right distance. With a best friend, less effort gives you more. That is what makes the friendship feel like home.

Can you have more than one best friend?

You can. Some people have two or even three duals in their life. A dual partner, a dual friend, maybe a dual sibling if you are lucky. Each one is a best friend in their own way.

What most people do not have is a long list of best friends. If someone says all their friends are best friends, they are probably using the word to mean something else. A best friend is a specific fit, and that fit is rare.

How to tell if a friendship could become a best friendship

You feel it before you can explain it. Time with them is restful, not draining. They seem to notice the things you care about most. When you tell them something that matters, they listen in a way that makes you feel understood.

Small things go smoothly. You plan something together and it just works. You sit in silence and it feels comfortable. You have a disagreement and it settles without much damage.

If you want to see the shape of it more clearly, each of you can take the free friendship compatibility test. When you both have a type, Typeza shows whether you share Duality or one of the other 15 relationship types. That tells you what the friendship can give and where it might take effort.

What if your best friend is not your dual?

Some best friendships live in other relationship types. You might have a best friend in Mirror, where you care about the same things and see them from slightly different angles. Or Kindred, where you want the same things in life even if you go about them differently.

These friendships can matter just as much. They are not Duality, so they will not give you that specific ease. But if both people care and try, a friendship in a harder type can still be one of the most important in your life.

The difference is that it will take more effort. You will need to explain yourself more. Misunderstandings will happen more often. But if the friendship gives you enough, that effort is worth it.

Questions people ask

What makes someone your best friend?

A best friend is someone you can bring all of yourself to. They give you what you need most without trying, and you do the same for them. Time with them is easy, and you do not have to manage yourself around them.

How many best friends can you have?

Most people have one or two. Some people have none. A few people have three. The specific fit that makes a best friendship is rare, so a long list of best friends is unlikely.

What is the difference between a good friend and a best friend?

A good friend is someone you trust, who shows up and cares about you. A best friend is all of that, plus a specific fit that makes the friendship easier. With most friends, parts of the relationship take effort. With a best friend, less effort gives you more.

Can a best friend change over time?

Yes. People change, and friendships change. A best friend from school might drift away as your lives go in different directions. A newer friend might become closer as you spend more time together. The fit matters, but so does the choice to stay.
