Extraversion and Introversion
Two Ways of Engaging with the World
This isn't about being "outgoing" versus "shy." Some of the most socially confident people are introverts, and some quiet, reserved people are extraverts.
Extraverts
- Direct their attention outward: toward objects, people, and events
- Perceive the world as distinct elements to explore and engage with
- Generate energy naturally and need external stimulation to feel alive
Introverts
- Direct their attention inward: toward relationships, meanings, and personal interpretations
- Perceive the world as a web of connections
- Have limited energy reserves and recharge through solitude
The key difference is energy management: extraverts deplete when isolated too long, introverts deplete when engaged too long. Both can function outside their comfort zones: it just costs energy.
If you're an extravert, don't apologize for needing stimulation. If you're an introvert, don't apologize for needing space.
The question isn't which is better. It's how you can live most fully as the person you actually are.
