Constructivism and Emotivism

Two Ways of Processing Emotions

This is about how emotions are processed, stored, and retrieved.

Constructivists

  • Process content first, then emotions
  • Emotional coloring comes later, but once attached, it's durable
  • Might cry at the same movie scene twenty years later
  • Warm up slowly but stay attached deeply
  • Can hold grudges because emotions genuinely persist

Emotivists

  • Process emotions first, then content
  • Immediately sense mood and atmosphere
  • But intense feelings fade relatively quickly
  • Yesterday's crisis becomes today's anecdote
  • Recover from emotional injuries readily

The key difference: constructivists have slow-arriving, long-lasting emotions; emotivists have quick-arriving, faster-fading emotions.

If you're constructivist, recognize you might hold onto things past their time. If you're emotivist, recognize others might interpret your cooling as withdrawal.

Neither is healthier: just different emotional metabolisms.
